Incheon has it all (and more)! The ultramodern, massive Incheon International Airport, with railway connections to Seoul, features a casino, spa and golf course. Yeonan Pier, close to the popular Incheon Fish Market, is the starting point for many boat tours. Incheon is also known for its beach-lined islands, including Yeongjong and Muui-dong. Travelers can peruse designer shops in the Bupyeong district, enjoy events at the Arts Centre or discover local history at Liberty Park and Independence Memorial Hall. Dolmen is one of the pre-historic relics called “Megalith Culture,” structure made with natural or man-made stones.
In Ganghwa-gun, there are about 160 dolmens. Among them, 70 are registered as the World Cultural Heritage.
Jiseokmyo in Bugeun-ri, Ganghwa is a colony of 14 tombs, which is a typical type of tombs of the Bronze era (Historical Site. No. 137)
Let us visit the sites and remember those who sacrificed their lives during the war to defend freedom in the Republic of Korea. Palmido Island is an islet located 15.7 kilometers southwest of Incheon Port. The island name Palmido (literally “the tip of the number eight island”) is so named as the two islands lying north and south form the shape of the number eight during ebb tides. The beautiful island is also significant in that the country’s first lighthouse was built on it. More importantly, the most critical mission during the Incheon Landing Operation was the secret mission called “Light the Palmido Lighthouse” carried out by a special intelligence unit. Halfway to the lighthouse is a sculpture called ‘The Light of One Thousand Years’ built in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Palmido Lighthouse. At the peak, you can see two lighthouses. The smaller one on the left is the original Palmido lighthouse. The one behind it is a new lighthouse which was completed in 2003 to replace the original one that had been operational for 100 years. Go up to the 4th floor. From the Sky Garden Observatory, you can enjoy the magnificent blue waters of the West Sea.
Enjoy “European Football” in Incheon!
The two most favorite sports of Korean, football and baseball, are also introduced through Incheon. It is known that football was introduced by British soldiers and sailors in 1880s. They had matches at Jemulpo, which are the first game in Korea. A British literature “Morning Calm” in 1901 confirmed that Ganghwa School had a football club. Fortunately, Incheon citizens and whoever visit Incheon can comfortably enjoy the two top sports – football and baseball. At present, we cannot say a football club, Incheon United and a baseball club, SK Wyverns are the best. But we are sure that their home stadiums are unparalleled.
Incheon’s Chinatown came into being with the opening of Incheon Port in 1883 and Incheon’s designation as an extraterritoriality of the Ching Dynasty in the following year. In the past, the area held many stores trading goods imported from China, but currently most Chinese businesses in the area are restaurants. Today, the residents of Chinatown are mostly 2nd or 3rd generation Chinese, descendents of the early Chinese settlers. The area harbors many of the flavors of China, while the traditional culture of the first generation are preserved.
