Yeosu, A Popular International Vacation Spot,
Korean city’s volcanic beaches, idyllic islands and colorful historic sites
Yeosu is a city located on the southern coast of Korea in South Jeolla Province, South Korea and comprises the Old Yeosu City, founded in 1949, Yeocheon City, founded in 1986, and Yeocheon County which were merged into the current Yeosu city in 1998. After Yeosu was chosen to host the 2012 World Expo, it was catapulted into the tourism spotlight. Now that the South Korean city’s volcanic beaches, idyllic islands and colorful historic sites have been discovered, become a popular international vacation spot.
You can go to the Hyangiram temple, walk along the breakwater to Odongdo Island, or work your way through the fascinating Fish Market.
Yeosu Maritime Cable Car is the first of its kind in Korea, connecting Dolsan Island and the mainland over the ocean. Passengers can choose between the standard cabins and crystal cabins. In particular, crystal cabins allow passengers to observe the ocean below ones feet, experiencing the thrill of being suspended in mid-air through its transparent flooring.
The first suspension bridge in Korea that was made purely with Korean technology connects Yeosu to Gwangyang.
The tower in the suspension bridge that boasts the highest height (270m) in the world is higher than 63 building, and the distance between towers, 1,545m, was made so to commemorate the year of birth of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. It is majestic, with first class open sea views. The length between the towers, especially, is 4th longest in the world, followed by Japan’s Akashi Bridge, China’s Xihoumen Bridge, and Denmark’s Great Belt Bridge, and it is the longest in Korea. Also, the height of the tower is an altitude of 270m, higher than Seoul Namsan Mountain (262m) and 63 building (249m), and is the highest concrete tower in the world. Yi Sun-sin bridge is an important point of transportation when visiting Yeosu, so it shortens about 20 minutes of time for the visitors who are using Daejeon-Tongyeong highway and who are coming from near Gyeongbuk and Gyeongnam to Yeosu.
As it has formed along the cliff on the coastal terrace, difficult to see in the southern seas, it is called Bireonggil. Between the bottomless cliff’s bermes, there is Geumosup Forest, used for Chosun Kingdom’s palace’s construction material. Rocks of fantastic shapes are marvelous in Geumodo Island, an island at the edge of southern seas.
Geumodo Island is a place that seems like it would have a golden terrapin somewhere. The blindingly blue ocean that can be seen in Bireonggil mountain climbing will be an energizer that can recharge tedious life.
A new world that can be encountered after passing through Iljumun, a large stone cave, If you go up on Hyangiram Temple, more mysterious because it is raised up on a cliff, all worries disappear. Places as famous for sunrise as Hyangiram Temple are rare in Namdo. It is a special place where you can not only see sunrise, but also sunset as well!
Odongdo Island, when reencountered, touches one’s heart even more. The golden radiants unshine that comes through thick leaves onto the newly decorated red clay roads and neat Korean bamboo roads, is never that of this world. It is called Odongdo because it looks like paulownialeaves from far away. As the island is thick with camellia trees, it is also a famous symbol of Yeosu, as a camellia island. The camellia in Odongdo Island literally dyes the island with red.
